How To Date A Wagner Ware Skillet — Complete Collector's Guide
Dating a Wagner Ware skillet is not a matter of looking up a single number. It requires reading four physical markers together — the logo, the bottom configuration, the pattern number, and the handle style. Each marker tells part of the story. Together they tell the whole truth.

Section 1 — The Four Dating Markers
Wagner Ware skillets carry physical evidence of their manufacture on every surface. Learning to read these four markers in combination is the foundation of accurate dating.
1. The Logo
The mark cast into the top of the skillet — the foundry's signature. Wagner's logo evolved through several distinct phases between 1891 and 1959. The logo alone can narrow a skillet's production date to within a decade.
2. The Bottom Configuration
The underside of the skillet tells you about the foundry's production methods and era. Three configurations exist: gate mark, heat ring, and smooth bottom. Each belongs to a specific production window.
3. The Pattern Number
A four-digit number cast into the bottom of the skillet, often accompanied by a letter suffix. This number identifies the specific mold pattern used to cast the piece and the individual mold within that pattern series.
4. The Handle Style
The handle design — its profile, gate scar, and assist tab configuration — changed across production eras and provides a secondary dating confirmation.
No single marker is definitive on its own. A smooth bottom places a skillet post-1928. A Sidney -O- logo places it between 1922 and 1959. Together they confirm late Sidney production. This is the SSC method.
Section 2 — Logo Evolution Timeline
Wagner Manufacturing Company's logo evolved continuously from its founding through its acquisition. Each logo era corresponds to a specific production window and reflects the company's corporate identity at that time.
Era 1 — Block WAGNER, No Sidney (1891–1897)
The earliest Wagner Manufacturing Company pieces carry a simple block-letter WAGNER mark without the Sidney location identifier. These pieces predate the company's adoption of the Sidney -O- branding and represent the earliest documented Wagner production.

No city identifier
Gate marks common on bottom
Heavy casting weight typical of early production
Era 2 — Arc Logo (1897–approximately 1922)
Wagner introduced an arc-style logo in the late 1890s that carried the company through the early 20th century. The arc logo period represents Wagner's expansion into national distribution and the refinement of their casting process.

Era 3 — Stylized Sidney -O- Logo (approximately 1922–1959)
The most commonly encountered Wagner mark. The stylized script W with WAGNER WARE arced above SIDNEY -O- below and the size number centered is the signature of Wagner's prime production era. This is the mark that defines Wagner Ware in the collector record.

Era 4 — Transitional and Post-Sidney Production
Following Wagner's acquisition and eventual consolidation, production continued under modified branding. Post-1959 pieces lack the Sidney -O- identifier or carry different ownership marks. These pieces fall outside the SSC collection scope of pre-1960 Ohio production.
Section 3 — Bottom Configuration Dating
The underside of a Wagner skillet is one of the most reliable dating tools in the collector's arsenal.
Gate Mark Bottom (pre-approximately 1890)
A raised line running across the bottom of the skillet — the remnant of the sand mold's pouring gate. Gate marks indicate pre-industrial casting methods and place a piece firmly in the earliest production era. A gate-marked Wagner skillet is among the oldest pieces in the Wagner production record.
SSC Note: Gate marks are the physical signature of 19th century foundry practice. Their presence on a piece is immediate evidence of early manufacture.
Heat Ring Bottom (approximately 1891–early 1930s)
A raised circular ring on the bottom of the skillet, sized to fit the stove eye opening of wood and coal burning kitchen ranges. The heat ring directed heat upward around the cooking surface and stabilized the pan on the stove eye.
Heat rings are present on Wagner pieces through approximately the late 1920s. Their presence narrows a piece to the earlier portion of the Sidney -O- era when combined with that logo.
Key dating rule: Sidney -O- logo + heat ring = approximately 1922–1930.
Smooth Bottom (approximately 1928–1959)
As gas and electric ranges replaced wood and coal stoves, the heat ring became functionally obsolete. Wagner transitioned to smooth-bottom production through the late 1920s and early 1930s.
A smooth-bottom Sidney -O- skillet is a later piece — comfortably post-1928 and potentially as late as the 1950s. Additional markers are required to narrow the date further.
Key dating rule: Sidney -O- logo + smooth bottom = approximately 1928–1959.
The Overlap Period
Wagner did not switch from heat ring to smooth bottom production on a single date. Both configurations were produced simultaneously during the transition period of approximately 1928–1932. A heat ring piece from this window and a smooth bottom piece from the same window may carry identical logos and pattern numbers. This is not an inconsistency — it is the physical record of a foundry in transition.
Section 4 — Pattern Numbers Explained
Every Wagner skillet carries a pattern number cast into the bottom — a four-digit number that identifies the specific mold pattern used to produce that piece.
The Four-Digit Pattern Number
Wagner's pattern numbering system assigned specific numbers to each skillet size in each production series. The pattern number is not the size number — it is the mold design identifier.

The Letter Suffix
Following the four-digit pattern number, most Wagner pieces carry a single letter — A, B, C, D through the alphabet. This letter is the mold identifier. Wagner used multiple physical sand molds to produce each pattern simultaneously, and each mold was assigned a letter to track production.
A suffix of A indicates the first mold produced for that pattern. A suffix of J — as on the SSC Museum Collection's Wagner No. 3 skillet pattern 1063J — indicates the tenth mold made for that pattern, confirming significant production volume preceded that specific casting.
Collector application: The letter suffix does not change the dating of a piece but confirms its position within the production run of that specific pattern.
What Pattern Numbers Cannot Tell You
The pattern number confirms the mold design — it does not confirm the production date. The same pattern number was used across multiple production years. Pattern numbers must be read in combination with logo and bottom configuration for accurate dating.
Section 5 — Size Numbers Explained
The size number cast into the center of the bottom — or on some pieces into the handle — is one of the most misunderstood marks in cast iron collecting.
Size Numbers Are Not Diameter Measurements
Wagner's size numbers do not correspond to the skillet's diameter in inches. They correspond to the stove eye opening size on wood and coal burning ranges of the 19th and early 20th centuries. A No. 8 skillet fit the No. 8 stove eye — not an 8-inch opening.

The J mold suffix confirms this casting came from the tenth mold in the 1063 pattern series — evidence of a well-established production run.
